Crossing Language Barriers
The Voices and Imaginations of China
People's Literature Magazine was the first national-level literary journal to be established after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. In order to expand the global reach of Chinese literature, People's Literature created an English-language sister publication, Pathlight magazine, in 2011. The name Pathlight was chosen because the magazine is meant to be “a light on the road of East-West exchange”.
Each issue is approximately 160 pages in length. It is printed in four colors, with a binding, design, and layout that aims to match international tastes.
Building on the initial English edition, other language editions of Pathlight are slowly being rolled out: French, Italian, German, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Swedish, and Hungarian.
People's Literature magazine has invited more than a hundred translators and scholars, all experts in Chinese and deeply committed to Chinese culture, to participate in the creation of the magazines. They are all native speakers of foreign languages, and highly experienced translators of Chinese.
People's Literature aims to make its foreign-language editions the best journals of translated literature available, not only conveying Chinese voices and stories to readers around the world, but also allowing readers to experience Chinese literature’s take on the larger questions of the world and humanity. We’re looking forward to sharing more literary exchanges with you in the pages of People's Literature's foreign-language editions.
