VISUAL STORYTELLING
At 5pm on November 16, 2017, Zhu Yingchun sent a few of pictures to his circle of friends on WeChat, saying that he had met a one-legged monster with wings and the body of a fish outside his studio. The news and pictures caused quite a stir and many were curious. Some said it was fake but Zhu Yingchun insisted that everyone has seen a similar bird; it’s just that they've never paid any attention to it. Have you really seen this bird? On May 31, Zhu Yingchun will tell you a story about discovering this bird at StoryDrive.

  10:5011:20Illustration is an inter-disciplinary art
VISUAL STORYTELLING
Caver Zhang (Wu Mao) has always loved reading comic strips, children's literature and story books since he was a child. Later, he learned to draw, and became an illustrator subsequently. He feels that illustrating allows him to read and draw at the same time. As such, he has never abandoned this hobby. As far as his individual creative identity is concerned, there is no denying that inter-discipline is a very intuitive dominant feature in illustration; and not merely in terms of technique and creative form. So what does inter-discipline mean, and what disciplines are involved? Mr Zhang will share his discoveries and thoughts with the audience in this session.

SPEAKER:
Caver Zhang, university lecturer, picture book author, illustrator

11:2012:00Transboundary - exploration - the eternal beauty of picture books
VISUAL STORYTELLING
Heryin Books has scored music to children’s poetry written by Yang Huan, and was shortlisted for six Golden Melody Award categories. It has also composed new music for classical rhyme, and received the best children’s music album at the 20th Golden Melody Award. In the last 10 years, it has explored animation, children’s TV programs and related fields. Heryin constantly seeks to perfect the quality of its works whether in terms of book publishing or children's books and animation crossovers; what matters is whether its works would stand the test of time, and not be made obsolete. It therefore continuously explores the possibility of eternal beauty for its works. Heryin’s Editor-in-Chief, Chou Yih-fen, will share some examples with the audience, such as the six-year project of complementing Yu Kwang-chung’s poems with illustrations; this too was an epochal and crossover attempt. Leveraging the art form of a new generation of creators, it is hoped that these wonderful poetry classics would connect with a new era, and at the same time, explore the eternal beauty of the combination of these poems and illustrations.

SPEAKER:
Chou Yih-fen, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Heryin Books

  12:0012:30Can picture books be digitized?
NEW MODEL
Children used to play games and watch cartoons when they get their hands on a mobile phone, but comics and cartoons give people a completely different feeling. Cartoons are similar to videos, with an emphasis on plot and fast-paced action. Comics on the other hand, offer knowledge, learning and thought process to children. “Animation book” is a medium between books and cartoons. It has both animation and sound effect; interactive and gaming functions have also been added. It has seen significant breakthroughs in making reading fun. Ren Hui, Founder & CEO of Ellabook, will give us an in-depth presentation of the characteristics of “animation books” as well as the relationship between “animation books” and its role in promoting reading among children.

NEW MODEL
The Internet has entered a phase of content competition in China, but the level of commitment by the publishing industry is a far cry from that of the media industry. Many successful content startups are involved in publishing, but again, an adequate response from the publishing industry has been lacking. Mobile Internet presents writers unprecedented opportunities to be discovered. Huang Yikun, president of Jianshu Copyright Center believes that self-publishing will continue, but it is not a rival of traditional publishing; together, theirs will be a prodigious integration. Author + writing platform + free publishers - that will be the future of publishing.
