Beijing Film Academy

BFA (Beijing Film Academy) is the only film academy in China. With 263 faculty members and 2364 students, including 48 PhD students, 422 graduates, 1894 undergraduates and 84 overseas students, it is also the largest film academy in Asia.

The official motto of BFA, under which thousands of China’s movie practitioners have been educated for decades, is “technical mastery fostering artistic vision”. More than 50% of all directors, cinematographers, art designers and sound engineers currently active in China’s film industry are BFA graduates. China’s highest international film awards at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice have been won by globally recognised BFA alumni including directors such as Xie Fei, Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Jia Zhangke, Wang Quan’an, as well as photographers like Gu Changwei or Zhao Fei.

The Screenwriting Department has established a teaching system that is both advanced and at the same time fit for China’s movie industry. Since scriptwriters and theorists can be considered as designers of the film art, the Screenwriting Department of Beijing Film Academy may well be called the “cradle of Chinese film”.
