The Best German Book Design

The Book Art Foundation holds its competition every year to find Germany’s most beautiful books. The prizes given out to the best designed books are regarded as the highest honor at the national level. The competition was first held in 1929. An independent jury evaluates typography, Design printing, paper and bookbinding of the entries and awards prizes to books of high quality in overall conception and design. The emphasis of the selection criteria is laid on aesthetic expression of visual and tactile beauty and the interplay of content and form. Every year 50 books are awarded prizes as “the most beautiful German books”. The sponsor is the Book Art Foundation and the jury of the competition is made up of 9 to 12 experts. The books submitted belong to various categories, including fiction art and photography, academic books on science and technology, schoolbooks, and other non-fiction, etc.
The aim of the competition is to spark internal discussions about book design among professtionals, encourage the study and research for book production, make the readers more sensitive to well designed books and bear out the view that high quality books may not necessarily be expensive.

German Book Information Center of Frankfurt Book Fair organizes exhibitions for these prize winning books throughout China – at large book festivals and book fairs, as well as in cooperation with numerous partners in the field of publishing, art, design and education.
