JAMES CHAU(周柳建成)
News Anchor, CCTV
UN Goodwill Ambassador
UK/CHINA

JAMES CHAU is a British-Chinese news presenter. In 2005, he joined China Central Television and since then has helped lead its on-air coverage from the studio, and on location as a correspondent. He has interviewed major personalities from Winnie Mandela, to Elton John, and President Robert Mugabe, as well as Nobel laureates Aung Sang Suu Kyi, Muhammad Yunus, and Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. In addition to CCTV, he can be watched on BBC World, where he guest presents the award-winning show Horizons.

His latest assignment was the disappearance of Flight MH370. Initially covering the story from Beijing, he spent five weeks in Kuala Lumpur, becoming the first journalist to speak to Ahmad Jauhari, CEO of Malaysia Airlines. In another world exclusive, he was also first to interview Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein. Meanwhile, his investigative reporting led him to the unreleased transcript, breaking the news of the last words from the pilots: "Goodnight, Malaysian 370".

James is a UN Goodwill Ambassador, a key platform in his work against HIV and AIDS. He travels widely in this role, and continues to engage with fellow activists Annie Lennox, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, and Chinese First Lady Madam Xi Jinping. He has showcased all three women on his television programs, reaching 85 million viewers in China and globally, and on social media, where he is followed by 1.7 million on Weibo.

He is involved in two film projects scheduled for release in 2015: as co-producer of Kids-R, a documentary with Elton John, and appearing in a major fashion feature on Tiffany & Co. He is writing his first book, which includes Lauren Bush, Fatima Bhutto, Lily Cole and Arianna Huffington. Born in London, he studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music, and graduated from Cambridge, where The John C.B. Chau Prize in Engineering is named in honor for his father.
