Zhang Zhijun has explored publishing from its traditional means into the digital age. She has been a change maker and tireless promoter for innovation and social justice through publishing. In 2012, Zhang was awarded Beijing News' "Children's Respect" Book Prize.

Zhang's book projects include:
2002 Opened a new era of picture story books in China by introducing the renowned Taiwan picture book author Jimmy Liao, particularly to depict individuals when rapid urbanization changes everything. The JIMMY series was sold a legendary 1.2 million copies and won numerous awards including China Outstanding Bestseller Award, and the Social Sciences Outstanding Book Prize.

2003 " Record of Beijing " by WANG Jun, was a landmark for triggering heated public debates over the value and protection of Beijing's old town. The book was consequently published in English (cited Classic by the New York Review of Books) and Japanese.
"Cities in the Reporter's Notebook" also by WANG Jun won the Industry's Outstanding Bestseller Award (2008), National Library Wenjin Award (2008), China Publishing Group Picture Book Award (2008).

Other awards:“Lens for Green”by WANG Yongchen, won The Best Writer Award of Science Times Reading Cup(2004).“Ten Years in Kekexili”by YANG Xin ,won Top 100 Bestseller Books for Youth(2006).

In 2009, Zhang Zhijun established the Joint Publishing Picture Book Space (JPPBS), to create a base for nurturing publishing of China-Made picture books. Over the years JPPBS has become one of China's most active and influential platform for researching, cooperating and publishing picture story books.Starting from 2012, JPPBS has started an experimental CLASSROOM, to systematically attract talents in creating and disseminating China-Made picture story books. The CLASSROOM provides trainings and workshops to for creative arts and story-telling, remaking and co-making of Chinese stories, targeted research and study tours. The JPPBS uses a collaborative approach for dissimination, including eBooks, games, comics, forums, interactive gaming, exhibitions and competitions, as these are the untapped areas for reaching out to the market.
